Caramel apples are one everyone's favorite candy. This is a healthier version of this treat.
Ingredients
  • 4 Apples
  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 1 tsp of Vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp of honey
  • 2½ cups of regular granulated sugar
  • Wooden sticks
Instructions
  1. wash and dry the apples well
  2. Slice the apples and make sure you dry the slices as well (at this point you can decide on keeping the slices whole or cut them in half)
  3. Run a wooden stick through the centre of each apple
  4. Pour the water, the sugar, the honey and the vanilla extract into a small saucepan and melt everything well
  5. Put a candy thermometer into the saucepan and when the temperature reaches 300°F (150°C)remove the saucepan from the heat
  6. Tilt the saucepan slightly and dip the apples to coat them with a thin layer of the melted sugar
  7. Let the apples drip over the saucepan. The best way to do this is to roll the a apples over the saucepan until they stop dripping
  8. Place the coated apples on a tray covered with parchment paper, where you'll let them dry.
  9. As soon as the apples are cold they are ready to be served.
Notes
Tip #1 - If you do not have a candy thermometer the best way to prepare the coating is by heating it over medium-low temperature while stirring. To check if it is ready to dip the apples in, you simply dip a tsp and let it drip over a cold glass of water. If once it's in the water it turns solid (like a candy) it's ready to be used. Tip #2 - Right after dipping the apples and letting the extra coating drip, you can dip the apples in coconut, grind nuts, sprinkles or anything else you'd like to have on them.
